Glenville centers on the old woolen mill and the short stretch of Glenville Street near it, then spreads into quiet, leafy roads toward Round Hill, King Street, and the Port Chester line. There is no train station here, the village core is small, and two addresses a mile apart can live very differently. So test the station drive, the school assignment, and an ordinary errand loop from the exact street before you decide.
“Is Glenville walkable?” and “How close is Westchester?” are the wrong questions. What matters is which Glenville a given street actually hands you, because two addresses a mile apart can answer very differently.
Closest thing Glenville has to walkable: the converted mill, a few storefronts, the post office area, and the former Stop & Shop site. A good base if you want a village feel on the western side. Still drive the train and the school pickup, because being near the storefronts does not shorten the trip to a station.
Often the better pick for space, privacy, or a week that leans toward Round Hill, King Street, or Westchester. Look twice if your real life is Greenwich Avenue dinners, Tod’s Point mornings, or a caregiver who crosses town daily, because those become longer drives from up here.
These three western neighborhoods blur together on a map but live differently. Compare one Tuesday from each: school or camp route, station plan, grocery and pharmacy loop, late pickup, and where the adults end up after work.
Glenville is easiest to read as a lived routine, not a label: a quick stop in the village, a quiet residential drive home, a station you picked on purpose, and the errands that pull west toward Port Chester or up toward Westchester. Drive these from the real address before you decide.

The two stations sit in different directions from most Glenville addresses. Driving both shows you which one is the calmer habit and where the parking or drop-off actually works.

A western address can suit a Glenville-anchored week and feel awkward if afternoons keep pulling you toward central Greenwich.

With the former Stop & Shop site mid-changeover, plenty of grocery runs cross into Port Chester or up toward Westchester. The loop tells you whether Glenville is a base or a place you keep leaving.

If your weekends already cross the New York line, the western edge is a feature. If they default to the beach or the Avenue, you will feel the extra distance.
The visible center is the cluster around Glenville Street and Weaver Street: the old Hawthorne Woolen Mill, the converted mill now leasing apartments and lofts under the name The Mill, a row of storefronts, and the 21 Glenville Street lot where Stop & Shop closed in 2023. That gives Glenville a clearer identity than a purely residential pocket, but it does not make every address walkable. A few homes are a short stroll from the storefronts; most are wooded western-Greenwich roads where the car comes out for everything.
Worth tracking: DeCicco & Sons, a New York gourmet grocer, won Greenwich Planning & Zoning approval to take over that former Stop & Shop. An earlier summer-2025 opening came and went, and as of mid-2026 the store had not opened. Until it does, the everyday grocery run for many Glenville households crosses into Port Chester or up toward Westchester. Treat the new store as a maybe and check its status yourself before you lean on it.
The western position is what changes the map. Port Chester, King Street, I-684, and the Merritt Parkway corridor are all an easy reach from here. The cost shows up going the other way: Greenwich Avenue, Tod’s Point, the east-side activities, and downtown dinners all take more planning than they would from in-town, Cos Cob, Riverside, or Old Greenwich.
For schools, Glenville School, Western Middle School, and Greenwich High School are the usual starting names, with Glenville the neighborhood elementary for much of the area. But Greenwich assigns by attendance area, not by what the neighborhood is called, and a few streets can change the answer. Run the exact address through the district’s School Finder, then handle registration, residency verification, and the bus or drop-off route before you treat any school as settled.
For commuting, start with the station you do not have. There is no Glenville stop. Most households weigh Greenwich station, the downtown express stop, against Port Chester just over the line, and the two sit in different directions from most addresses here. Drive both at the hour you would actually leave, add parking or drop-off, the evening pickup, and the plan for a late train or bad weather. The station that looks farther on a map is sometimes the steadier daily habit.

The converted woolen-mill building on Glenville Street, reopened around 2021 as apartments and lofts. The original Hawthorne Woolen Mill is the National Register landmark the village grew around. The Mill today is housing, not a shopping center.
The Stop & Shop at 21 Glenville Street closed in 2023; DeCicco & Sons won Planning & Zoning approval to open a market there but, as of mid-2026, had not opened. Confirm the current status before you count on it. Until it opens, many residents drive to Port Chester or Westchester for a full grocery run.
